Dr. Peter Judge

Our Mondays at the Oratory series starts off the New Year with a look at the Roman Catholic approach to the use and interpretation of the Bible as Sacred Scripture. The Bible has become much more a part of Catholic liturgy and spiritual life since the Second Vatican Council, and Catholics value the Bible as much as other Christians. Yet, whereas Protestant Christians have emphasized the principle of sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), Catholics have valued the importance of Scripture and Tradition as complementary expressions of God’s revelation. We will examine what this means, how Catholic scholars interpret the Bible, and how this is important for Catholic belief, prayer, and practice.

Dr. Peter Judge did his doctoral work in Scripture at the Catholic University in Louvain, Belgium. He is Chair of the Philosophy and Religion Department at Winthrop University, where he teaches a variety of courses in religion and scripture. He is a popular teacher and has presented many programs for us over the past several years.

No charge, but pre-registration is appreciated.
