OLD TESTAMENT
John Barker, OFM
Topic: Learning the Language of the Prophets

The Biblical prophets proclaim the character and actions of the God of Israel using metaphors, traditions, and other ways of conceiving reality that—while they made sense to their contemporaries—often leave modern readers confounded. This week we will explore the “language of the prophets” to better appreciate their profound, sometimes disturbing, but always hopeful witness to the God of Israel and of all creation.

John Barker is a Franciscan friar and has served on the faculty of the Catholic Theological Union since 2012. He is a book reviewer for The Bible Today, contributes regularly to various pastoral publications, and has a three-year Sunday lectionary series soon to be published.

NEW TESTAMENT
Patrick Hartin
Topic: The Spirituality of the Letter of James and Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount

For Christians, faith leads to action. At the heart of the New Testament lie these two documents that embrace this central vision. Our study will begin by exploring the nature of Christian spirituality, its Biblical roots and foundations. A focus on these two documents reveals their spiritual insights into faith in God and the response this relationship requires. Practical illustrations through the lives of Dorothy Day and Archbishop Oscar Romero will bring this vision into our own lives and time.

Patrick Hartin is a priest of the Diocese of Spokane and formerly taught at Gonzaga University. Originally from South Africa, he has authored several books on the Letter of James as well as Biblical spirituality and writes for Give Us This Day and At Home with the Word.
